[Scene opens on a black stage with steps in the middle. AT the top of the steps stands ____ ]

[ Many identical dancers wearing black and red come onto the stage and slowly turn]

Ruby: Me! Let me join. I want to be a dancer.
Leader: Can you dance? Can you do what we do? Are you strong enough?
Ruby: Yes! Yes! Let me try.
Leader: Join us then.
Ruby: Here I am at last
Dancing through the night
Trying to learn fast
Dancing for my life
Chorus: What will you give?
What will it be?

Will you join me?
Gregor: Well how are you finding our little troop of dancers Ruby?
Ruby: Oh I love it, sir. But I am so tired.
Gregor: Come with me Ruby, come and lie down for a while.
Chorus: What will you give?

Will you let us see?
[RUBY re joins the dance, but soon she collapses at the front of the stage, the dancers gather round until Gregor returns and shoos them all away]
Gregor: What's the matter Ruby?
Ruby: Oh sir, I am so tired, I am having a baby.
Gregor: Well you can't dance with us any more, where is the father? Will he marry you?
Ruby: I don't know sir, will you?
Gregor: How dare you! Go now! Never return.
Ruby: But where will I go? What will I do?
Chorus: Where will she go?
What will she do?
Who will care for the child?
What can she do?
[RUBY returns on stage carrying a bundle that she lies at the foot of the stairs. As she sings she removes her red ballet shoes and places them in the basket with the baby.]
Ruby: What will I give?
